Here are Some Tips on Proper Handling of Used Motor Oil and Filters
When you drain the oil from your vehicle, store it in a clean, leak-proof container. There are some great reusable drain containers at most auto parts stores or simply use a clean, empty milk jug. Make sure the lid is closed securely.
Don't mix used oil with other auto fluids like antifreeze, two-stroke mixtures, or brake fluid. This can contaminate the used oil and make it difficult to recycle. Save the other fluids separately and recycle them through your local HHW program.
Used oil filters should be drained of all free-flowing oil, stored in a leak-proof bag, coffee can or bucket and recycled.

An individual may transport a maximum of 20 gallons of used oil each day in containers no larger than five gallons in size.
On the trail, carry rags and kitty litter, or other absorbent, to clean up any leaks or spills. Pack this out with you for proper disposal or recycling. Keep after leaks and drips! They usually mean bigger problems if not attended to. |
